Yongsan Park housing supply proposal sparks conflict with Seoul and Yongsan officials

The South Korean government is initiating public discourse regarding the potential use of Yongsan Park, including the Yongsan Children's Garden, for housing supply. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has indicated a strong intent to utilize public land to provide housing for young people and newlyweds, suggesting that the entire Yongsan Park area could be considered for development.

This proposal has met significant opposition from the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Yongsan District Office. Local authorities argue that the park, which is being returned to the public after 120 years, should be preserved as a national symbolic space and a green asset for future generations rather than being viewed through a development lens. Residents have also expressed their dissent through public demonstrations.

Legal hurdles remain, as the ‘Yongsan Park Special Act’ currently restricts the use of the main park site for purposes other than a public park. Amending this law and reaching a social consensus are necessary steps for any development. The Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Mayor of Seoul are scheduled to meet on the 20th to discuss the matter and seek potential cooperation.
