Yonsei Professor debates fair compensation for knowledge workers
Kim Hyun-chul, a professor at Yonsei University College of Medicine, has sparked a debate regarding the appropriate compensation for intellectual labor after declining a 300,000 won fee for a government-sponsored lecture. Kim noted that while the lecture itself lasted one hour, the process involved over a month of research, data review, and preparation.
Kim argued that current compensation models often fail to account for the extensive preparation time required for expert presentations. He contrasted this with the high consultation fees of top specialists, such as psychiatrist Oh Eun-young, suggesting that the accumulated expertise and years of training of top-tier professionals justify premium pricing in a capitalist society.
Under the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act, the maximum honorarium for private university professors is capped at 1 million won per hour. However, Kim pointed out that public institutions often set much lower rates based on internal budgets, which can lead to significant discrepancies between the actual labor performed and the remuneration provided.
