Yonsei University College of Medicine launches physician-scientist training program

Yonsei University College of Medicine has announced the establishment of the ‘Pre-PS (Physician-Scientist) Intensive Major’ to cultivate future physician-scientists. Starting from the second semester of the 2026 academic year, the program will target pre-medical students to build foundational research capabilities and basic academic knowledge early in their education.

As part of the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s ‘Convergence Physician-Scientist Training Project,’ the program offers three specialized tracks: Quantitative Medicine, Biomedical Science, and Social Medicine. Students will study foundational subjects such as mathematics, statistics, life sciences, and social sciences that integrate with medical studies. The curriculum extends beyond the medical college, allowing students to take courses from various departments within Yonsei University.

To bridge the gap between theory and practice, the college plans to connect this early education with its existing ‘Scholarly Concentration Program,’ which allows third-year medical students to focus on intensive laboratory research. Dean Choi Jae-young emphasized that future medical leaders require both clinical expertise and the research capacity to solve medical problems through interdisciplinary understanding.
