Yonsei University cyberattack compromises 10,000 users
A cyberattack on Yonsei University’s online portal has resulted in the leak of personal information belonging to approximately 10,000 current students, graduates, and faculty members. The breach, which includes international students, was first detected around 7:40 p.m. on a Tuesday. Following the initial detection, the university blocked the source IP address, but a second hacking attempt from a different IP address was recorded the following morning.
Compromised data includes names, affiliations, student and faculty identification numbers, mobile phone numbers, email addresses, and passwords. Some system management details, such as login identification keys and failed password attempt counts, were also exposed. The university confirmed that highly sensitive data, including resident registration numbers, alien registration numbers, and passport numbers, were not compromised.
Yonsei University has reported the incident to the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) and plans to refer the case to investigative authorities. The university is conducting a comprehensive security review and has provided a way for affected individuals to check their compromised details via the official university website.
