Yoo Seung-min referred to prosecutors over university hiring scandal
South Korean police have referred former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min and three others to prosecutors regarding allegations of preferential hiring for his daughter, Yoo Dam, at Incheon National University.
The Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency's anti-corruption and economic crime investigation unit stated that Yoo and Incheon National University President Lee In-jae were booked without detention on charges of obstruction of business. Additionally, President Lee and two other professors face charges of violating the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act for allegedly receiving improper requests related to the appointment. While the charges were applied, police noted that no evidence of actual bribery was found during the investigation.
The controversy surfaced during a National Assembly audit last year, where allegations were made that Yoo Dam passed the initial screening in second place despite low scores in qualitative paper reviews. Critics pointed out that she received perfect scores in academic background, career, and quantitative paper metrics despite having minimal professional experience compared to other candidates.
