Yorgen Fenech accuses police of framing him in Caruana Galizia murder trial

During the 47th day of his jury trial regarding the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, Yorgen Fenech accused police investigators of framing him and protecting former Office of the Prime Minister chief of staff Keith Schembri.

Fenech testified that investigators changed their demeanor toward him once he began discussing Schembri. He alleged that Schembri had expressed a desire to have Caruana Galizia killed as early as 2014 or 2015 and claimed Schembri once mentioned paying €30,000 to individuals to carry out the murder. Fenech stated he did not take these comments seriously at the time, describing them as Schembri merely wanting to “vent”.

Prosecutor Godwin Cini challenged Fenech on inconsistencies between his current testimony and his 2019 police statements, specifically regarding a dinner involving Schembri and Melvin Theuma. The prosecution also questioned Fenech’s lack of concern regarding alleged murder payments, noting the close relationship between Fenech and Schembri.
