Yorgen Fenech acquittal faces potential prosecution appeal in Malta

The prosecution is expected to appeal the acquittal of Yorgen Fenech in the murder case of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. Following an 8-1 jury verdict that cleared Fenech of complicity and conspiracy, the Attorney General has a 15-day window to file an appeal based on legal or procedural grounds. If successful, the case could lead to a retrial before a panel of three judges.

In the wake of the verdict, Archbishop Charles Scicluna issued a warning regarding the risk of ‘national capture’ in Malta. He cautioned that informal networks of influence, driven by wealth and mutual protection, could undermine national institutions. Scicluna highlighted concerns involving corruption among politicians, public officials, and law enforcement, suggesting that private interests might increasingly supersede public duty.
