Yorgen Fenech acquittal sparks jury interference allegations and retrial calls

Following the acquittal of Yorgen Fenech on charges related to the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia, questions have emerged regarding potential jury interference. Reports suggest that a telephone survey was conducted prior to the empanelled jury, asking respondents about political allegiances, opinions on the courts, and views on key figures involved in the case, including Fenech and Caruana Galizia.

While pollster Vincent Marmara denies that jurors were targeted, accounts from Jason Azzopardi and Matthew Caruana Galizia suggest that many individuals receiving these calls were potential jurors. The University has been asked to investigate the matter.

In response to the verdict, Matthew Caruana Galizia has called for a retrial, stating, “Yorgen Fenech got away with murder.” He criticized the Maltese state, alleging it remains a “mafia state” that ensures killers are liberated. The prosecution is reportedly considering an appeal, which could lead to a fresh trial.
