Yorgen Fenech denies ordering Caruana Galizia murder, implicates Keith Schembri

Yorgen Fenech has testified in his own defense, categorically denying that he ordered the 2017 assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. During his testimony, Fenech implicated Keith Schembri, the former chief of staff to Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, alleging a close relationship of loyalty.

Fenech claimed that shortly after the murder, Schembri visited him to request that sensitive information regarding the investigation be passed to Melvin Theuma, a pardoned middleman. Fenech stated he provided details concerning police evidence, such as burner phones and bomb codes, which he described as the ‘biggest mistake of my life.’

Fenech further alleged that Schembri was involved in financial matters related to Theuma and the Degiorgio brothers, claiming Schembri authorized a €50,000 loan and later provided €75,000 in cash via a driver. Additionally, Fenech testified that a USB drive provided by Theuma contained recordings of Schembri, asserting that these recordings ‘still exist today’ and that Schembri had heard them on at least two occasions.
