Yorgen Fenech trial reveals weapons order and corruption links in Daphne Caruana Galizia murder
During the trial of Maltese businessman Yorgen Fenech, prosecutors presented digital evidence from his seized phone, including searches for “AK47 with suppressor” and emails that appear to detail an order for hand grenades, Glock pistols with suppressors, Scorpion rifles and ammunition destined for Portomaso Tower in Malta. The judge ruled the material admissible, despite the defence’s claim that it was unrelated to the murder case.
Matthew Caruana Galizia, a software engineer and son of the slain journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, testified that his mother was reviewing internal Electrogas emails on the day she was killed by a car bomb in October 2017. He described how the leaked emails repeatedly mentioned Yorgen Fenech, who is accused of commissioning and financing the murder. Electrogas, partly owned by Fenech, had secured a major electricity contract after Malta’s 2013 election and was linked to alleged offshore corruption involving senior government officials.
