York and North Yorkshire approve £456 million transport investment

The York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority has approved a record £456 million transport investment programme. Developed alongside North Yorkshire Council and City of York Council, the four-year plan aims to improve roads, public transport, and walking and cycling infrastructure to enhance connectivity across urban, rural, and coastal communities.

Key components of the investment include upgraded public spaces, enhanced road safety, improved accessibility, and ‘Safe Routes to School’ schemes. The programme is designed to support economic growth by providing better access to healthcare, education, and employment.

In a related development, Mayor David Skaith is launching the next phase of the £7 million ‘Moving Forward’ campaign. Following the English Devolution and Community Empowerment Act 2026, the Mayor now holds a legal duty to address public health, economic inactivity, and isolation. The campaign focuses on four pillars: active travel, men’s mental health, movement and sport, and community connectivity, with projects projected to support over 27,000 people.
