York City sacks manager Stuart Maynard ahead of League Two debut

York City Football Club confirmed that manager Stuart Maynard has left his role with immediate effect, just three months after he guided the team to the National League title and promotion to the English Football League (League Two) for the first time in a decade. The club said the decision was “not an easy one” and stemmed from a “difference in direction and vision for the football club”. The statement added that the board believes the move will put York in a stronger long‑term position.

The departure comes eight days before York’s first competitive fixture of the new season – a Carabao Cup preliminary‑round tie against Crawley Town on 3 August – and ahead of their League Two opener against Bristol Rovers. The club quickly announced the appointment of Scott Lindsey as the new head coach. Lindsey, aged 54, previously managed Crawley Town, MK Dons and has experience with Swindon Town and other lower‑league clubs. York highlighted his “vast wealth of experience” in the EFL as the basis for the appointment.

York’s board called on supporters to trust the process while acknowledging the timing may seem unusual to outsiders. The sacking follows a record‑breaking season in which York amassed 108 points and 114 goals to clinch the National League title.
