York Station Gateway project opens new cycle lanes and pavements

New cycle lanes and pavements are scheduled to open on Monday, 28 September, as part of the York Station Gateway scheme. The project aims to transform the area in front of York’s historic railway station by providing dedicated routes for cyclists, pedestrians, and mobility aid users.

The development follows the removal of the Queen Street Bridge, which has created new public spaces and wider pavements, offering views of the city walls that have been obscured since the 1870s. Final road markings, street lighting, and signage installation have been completed to facilitate the opening.

While the vast majority of the new routes will be accessible, one short section on the station side of the road will remain temporarily closed. This delay is due to the planned relocation of an existing substation. Once the substation is moved, the continuous cycle lane will be completed.
