Yorkshire declared in drought following record dry period

The Environment Agency has officially declared a drought in Yorkshire following a period of unusually dry weather. The decision was triggered by low water levels in rivers and reservoirs, marking the region's fifth driest period on record between April and September.

Despite recent rainfall, officials noted that the lack of spring and summer precipitation has caused groundwater levels and river flows to drop significantly. Environment Agency manager Vicki Townend stated that even with several weeks of rain, the effects of the dry season cannot be quickly reversed. The region joins central, southern, and eastern England in drought status.

Yorkshire Water indicated that while the drought has been declared, it does not currently plan to introduce water restrictions for customers. However, the agency will continue to monitor the situation under the Yorkshire Drought Plan. This environmental shift follows a summer that was recorded as the hottest in the UK since 1884.
