Yorkshire towns win funding to revamp high streets

Sherburn in Elmet Town Council secured £41,976 from the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Vibrant and Sustainable High Streets Fund to create a year‑round market square, upgrade planters and signage, and host regular events aimed at boosting footfall and supporting local businesses.

In Leeds, a £2.9 million scheme for Armley Town Street is under public consultation. The plan, backed by Leeds City Council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority through the Active Travel Fund, would introduce a bus‑only section, wider footways, new pedestrian crossings, planting, and disabled parking, with the goal of improving safety and encouraging more visitors to the high street.
