Yosemite National Park issues bear safety warnings for campers

Yosemite National Park officials are warning visitors about the persistent hunger of black bears as the summer season ends. Due to an acute sense of smell, bears are frequently drawn to picnic areas by the scent of food, packaging, and even scented toiletries like baby wipes or hand lotion.

To prevent bears from becoming aggressive or requiring lethal removal, officials advise campers to use bear-resistant trash cans, keep food within arm’s reach while picnicking, and store all food, drinks, and toiletries in designated food lockers or hard-sided rooms overnight. If a bear approaches, visitors are instructed to yell loudly and aggressively to scare it away.

In related research regarding human-bear conflicts, studies have evaluated the efficacy of portable electric fencing systems. Results indicated that these deterrent systems were effective in protecting humans, food, and property from bears more than 99% of the time, offering a potential tool for wildlife conservation and damage mitigation.
