Yosemite National Park land exchange under consideration by Trump administration
The Trump administration is reportedly considering a land exchange that would transfer a roughly quarter-mile strip of Yosemite National Park to Kingsbarn Realty Capital, a Nevada-based real estate developer. The proposal aims to allow the company to build a private access road connecting its 83-acre property, located just outside the park's western boundary, to a major thoroughfare within Yosemite. Currently, accessing the property requires a circuitous 90-minute drive via unpaved forest roads.
In exchange for the parkland or an easement, the federal government would receive land of equal value elsewhere in California, though the specific location has not been determined. While Kingsbarn's counsel describes the move as an environmentally friendly solution to reduce vehicle emissions, the proposal has faced intense criticism from environmental groups, the Sierra Club, and California lawmakers. Opponents argue the deal could lead to the privatization of public lands and set a dangerous precedent.
The Department of the Interior has acknowledged that negotiations have taken place but denied that there is political pressure to reach a predetermined outcome, stating that any final decision would follow all federal laws and environmental review processes.
