Taiwan election candidates challenge disqualification rulings

Several candidates in Taiwan are contesting decisions by election commissions to revoke their eligibility for upcoming elections.

In Taipei, You Chih-pin, a candidate for city council in the Da'an and Wenshan districts, had his eligibility revoked by the Central Election Commission (CEC). The CEC ruled that You did not meet the requirement of having a registered residency for 10 years, specifically noting that the 10-year period must be calculated from the date he submitted proof of losing his mainland Chinese household registration. You, who was born in Fujian, has filed for an injunction at the Taipei High Administrative Court, arguing that the new interpretation of the rules unfairly strips the political rights of spouses from mainland China and their children born in Taiwan.

In Kaohsiung, a prospective village chief candidate surnamed Yeh attempted to protest at the Kaohsiung City Election Commission after being informed he was ineligible under the Election and Recall Act. The commission reported that 20 individuals in Kaohsiung were disqualified during the review process due to violations of Article 26 of the Act. The protest was halted by local police after the individual arrived with a crane to hang a protest banner.
