Mees Hilgers joins SC Heerenveen from FC Twente
Indonesian national team defender Mees Hilgers has officially joined Eredivisie club SC Heerenveen from FC Twente. The 25-year-old signed a contract for two seasons through 2028, with an option for a third year until 2029.
The transfer follows a period of significant tension between Hilgers and FC Twente. The player expressed frustration over a contract dispute, noting that the club used a collective labor agreement clause to automatically extend his contract for an additional year, a move he felt was driven by financial interests. This dispute led to Hilgers being excluded from the main squad and coincided with a serious ACL injury.
While Hilgers expressed gratitude for the resolution and the opportunity to play again, former coach Gertjan Verbeek criticized the move, labeling the defender ‘unreliable’ due to communication issues and reported absences during his time at Twente. Hilgers will wear number 2 for Heerenveen.
