Young adults increasingly reject car ownership as financial burden

A survey of 1,000 adults aged 18 to 29 conducted by insurance company Tempcover reveals a declining interest in car ownership among young people. Many respondents view vehicles as a “useless financial burden,” with 27% stating it is “unlikely” they will purchase a vehicle within the next three years.

Nearly half of those surveyed (47%) view a car merely as a functional appliance, comparable to a vacuum cleaner or a lawnmower. Instead of investing in vehicles, many young adults prefer to allocate funds toward other areas: 27% prioritize mental health and self-care, 23% favor dining out, 19% choose technology upgrades like phones or gaming setups, and 11% would rather spend on daily specialty coffees.

Alternative transportation methods are gaining traction. Approximately 43% of respondents feel comfortable relying on borrowing cars rather than owning them, while 23% would prefer a subscription-based model similar to streaming services, allowing access to a vehicle only when needed.
