Young Americans express distrust in tech leaders and economic stability

A survey by CNBC Generation Labs indicates a significant lack of trust among Millennial and Gen Z Americans toward major technology executives. Respondents aged 18 to 34 expressed skepticism toward leaders in the artificial intelligence and tech sectors, with many viewing figures such as Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Altman, and Elon Musk as “super villains” rather than innovators. Palantir CEO Alex Karp received the lowest trust rating, with 81% of respondents expressing a lack of confidence in his leadership. Even Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, identified as the most trusted among those listed, faced distrust from 65% of the young adult demographic.

This distrust coincides with broader economic frustrations among younger workers. Data suggests that Gen Z workers face challenges regarding purchasing power and earnings when adjusted for inflation compared to the Millennial generation. Economic concerns, including stagnant wages relative to productivity and the inability to achieve previous generational living standards, are cited as factors contributing to rising interest in socialism among young Americans.
