Young Chinese Workers Move into Nursing Homes to Cut Rent Costs

Facing high housing prices and a tough job market, some young Chinese adults are choosing to live in nursing homes. A pilot programme in Suzhou lets people under 35 rent a room for about 200‑300 yuan a month in exchange for volunteering time chatting with and supporting elderly residents.

Zhang Jin, a 25‑year‑old office worker, is one of the participants. After seeing the programme online, she applied, met the criteria of full‑time employment and no own home, and now spends her weekdays at work and her evenings and weekends caring for an 89‑year‑old resident and joining dance and social activities at the home. The arrangement reduces her housing cost dramatically, eases loneliness, and provides the seniors with younger companions.

The trend reflects broader pressure on China’s youth, whose unemployment rate for 16‑24‑year‑olds has risen sharply, prompting innovative housing solutions that benefit both generations.
