Younger gym-goers shift from cardio to strength training

Younger gym-goers in the United Kingdom are increasingly shifting their focus from traditional cardiovascular exercises, such as treadmill running and cycling, toward strength training and hybrid workouts. This trend is exemplified by the rise of Hyrox, a discipline described as both social and competitive.

Antonia Duffin, a Manchester-based gym owner and personal trainer, observes that clients are seeking diverse benefits, including physical strength, preparation for pregnancy, and managing health conditions like endometriosis. She notes a growing awareness among younger demographics regarding the long-term health benefits of resistance training, such as the prevention of osteoporosis.

Data from Sport England indicates an increase in young adults using gym machines and weights compared to nine years ago. Experts, including Dr. Andrew Scott from the University of Portsmouth, suggest that resistance training can improve body composition more rapidly than aerobic exercise. The shift is also being influenced by social media, where fitness influencers promote strength-based routines.
