Youngstown State defeats Southern Illinois 28-16
No. 8 Youngstown State secured a 28-16 road victory against No. 21 Southern Illinois at Saluki Stadium. This win marks the Penguins' first road victory of the season and their second consecutive ranked win, a feat not achieved by the program since 2016.
Despite an offensive struggle in the first half that saw quarterback Beau Brungard throw two interceptions and the team muster only 157 total yards, the defense provided critical support. Youngstown State trailed 10-7 at halftime but took control in the second half.
Brungard finished the game with 219 passing yards and one touchdown, while also contributing a rushing touchdown and 69 yards on 16 carries. The Penguins extended their lead in the third and fourth quarters following a Southern Illinois fumble, with scoring drives led by Brungard and Jaden Gilbert.
