Youssef Siher faces terrorism charges in Milan investigation

Youssef Siher, a 30-year-old researcher, is facing a validation hearing at San Vittore prison following his arrest. Prosecutors have requested his pretrial detention, accusing him of incitement to commit crimes with the aggravating factor of terrorism and organized violence during public demonstrations.

Investigators allege Siher played a central role in managing the online communication for ‘Movimento 17 ottobre’, a group that emerged following recent urban unrest in Milan. Prosecutors claim Siher demonstrated high technical proficiency in rapidly building a social media presence that reached nearly 9,000 followers, some of whom were reportedly inclined toward illegal actions against public order.

The arrest has sparked a political controversy in Italy. Maurizio Acerbo, secretary of Rifondazione Comunista, defended Siher’s right to freedom of opinion, leading to sharp criticism from political figures such as Democratic Party senator Filippo Sensi. Acerbo clarified that while he defends civil liberties, he does not support Hamas.
