Youth crime in Basel-Landschaft sees rise in traffic and violent offenses

The Youth Prosecutor's Office has released its 2025 annual report, revealing a slight overall decrease in reported crimes among children and adolescents. Total criminal proceedings fell by approximately 1 percent, from 1,101 cases in 2024 to 1,090 in 2025. Drug-related offenses also saw a decline, dropping from 120 to 105 cases.

However, traffic violations saw a significant surge, increasing by roughly 24 percent from 600 to 790 cases. The prosecutor's office attributes this spike to the rising popularity of electric trend vehicles among youths, many of whom operate them without proper insurance, technical compliance, or driving permits.

Additionally, the report notes a rise in serious violent crimes, marking the first increase in this category since 2021. In response, authorities are planning to expand their own violence prevention programs.
