Youth face rising barriers to economic and social independence

Youth independence is facing significant challenges due to economic pressures and systemic limitations. In Spain, Aldeas Infantiles SOS has proposed extending support for young people in the protection system until age 25. This initiative aims to provide a planned transition to autonomy for the 5,822 youths who reached adulthood last year, rather than ending support abruptly at 18. The proposal emphasizes education, financial support for higher studies, and access to affordable housing to bridge the gap between the average age of leaving home and the age of legal adulthood.

In a broader economic context, a Wells Fargo study highlights that many members of Generation Z struggle to achieve financial independence despite being employed. The study found that 64% of parents with children aged 18 to 28 report providing financial assistance for essentials like rent, groceries, and utilities. This trend is driven by stagnant entry-level wages, high rental costs, and an overall increase in the cost of living, which in turn affects the financial stability of the parents providing the aid.
