Youth homelessness climbs to 3.7% in New South Wales
New research released ahead of Homelessness Week shows that 3.7% of surveyed 14‑ to 19‑year‑olds in New South Wales experienced homelessness in the past year, up from 1% in the previous survey. The study of more than 4,000 young people also found a further 4% facing housing instability.
Mission Australia’s Sophia Morris said the report “paints a concerning picture of the challenges facing young people.” The findings highlight links to family conflict, domestic violence, affordability pressures and health issues. Executive General Manager Di Kapera called for immediate investment in early‑intervention measures, youth foyers and supported tenancies to keep young people safely housed.
The charity urges governments to increase funding for youth‑specific housing options, citing the proven effectiveness of youth foyers that combine accommodation with education, training and support services.
