Youth safety concerns rise over dangerous online groups and social media risks

Authorities and health agencies are raising alarms regarding the risks social media and online communities pose to children and adolescents. In Luxembourg, the BEE SECURE Helpline and local police have issued warnings about dangerous online groups, such as those referred to as ‘The Com’ or ‘764’. These dynamic networks operate across various platforms, including video games and messaging services, to manipulate vulnerable youth. Members may incite illegal or violent acts, including vandalism, theft, animal cruelty, and self-harm, often documenting these activities through photos and videos.

In France, the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) notes that while social media can facilitate connection and information, it presents significant risks to adolescent mental health. Concerns include cyberbullying and exposure to violent or age-inappropriate content. High-profile tragedies in the UK, France, and the US have highlighted the potential for extreme online pressure and harassment to lead to severe mental health crises and suicide.
