Illia Kovtun wins historic European gymnastics all-around gold for Croatia
Illia Kovtun has made history by winning the men's individual all-around gold medal at the European Gymnastics Championships in Zagreb. This marks the first time a gymnast has won this title representing Croatia. Kovtun, a Ukrainian-born athlete who now trains with GD Osijek – Žito, secured the victory by a margin of just 0.001 points over Arsenii Duhno.
In addition to the all-around success, Kovtun has qualified for three additional apparatus finals. The championship also saw significant activity from the 30th anniversary of the Plazma Sports Games for Youth in Split. This major amateur sporting event brought together over 1,200 young athletes from six countries, including Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Slovenia, North Macedonia, and guests from Ukraine.
Croatian youth athletes performed strongly during the first day of the Plazma games, earning ten medals across various disciplines, including gold in handball and track events. Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković attended the event in Split to meet with organizers and emphasize the government's ongoing support for the initiative.
