Youth sports attrition linked to parental criticism during the ‘drive home’

The phenomenon of the ‘drive home’—where parents criticize their children’s athletic performance immediately following a game or practice—is being highlighted as a factor in youth sports attrition. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, approximately 70% of youth athletes drop out of organized sports by the age of 13.

Melanie Bedard, mother of Chicago Blackhawks captain Connor Bedard, noted that many young athletes experience emotional distress during these car rides. Experts suggest that the intense pressure and criticism during these moments can damage long-term parent-child relationships and cause children to lose interest in athletics.
