Youth sports specialization poses health and burnout risks

Experts are warning parents about the physical and psychological risks associated with early sports specialization in children. Psychotherapist Dr. Uroš Perko notes that modern training regimens are often designed for older adolescents rather than younger children, which can lead to significant harm. He highlights that the pressure for results can overshadow a child's health, potentially leading to overlooked issues such as weight loss and eating disorders in young female athletes.

Similarly, Jan Březina, co-founder of the Gymnathlon project, warns that children who focus on a single sport from a very young age are at high risk of burnout. Research indicates that approximately 80 percent of Olympians engaged in two to three different sports during their youth. Březina suggests that parents should prioritize lifelong healthy habits and enjoyment over early competitive mastery to ensure children remain active and healthy as they grow.
