Youth suicide impacts adolescent mental health globally

The suicide of young people can deeply impact adolescents, even those with minimal connection to the deceased, by raising difficult questions regarding death, friendship, and personal vulnerability. According to data from the World Health Organization, suicide is the third leading cause of death globally for individuals aged 15 to 29, with more than 720,000 deaths occurring annually.

As September marks National Suicide Prevention Month, there is an increased focus on how to support youth affected by such tragedies. The loss of a peer can disrupt the perceived order of life, creating fears and existential questions among teenagers regarding their own safety and the mental health of their friends.
