Youth trends and care systems in Czechia and the US
Recent observations highlight shifting behavioral trends and care systems for youth in the Czech Republic and the United States.
In the Czech Republic, the system for managing behaviorally problematic children is strictly regulated by the state through the Ministry of the Interior and social services. These programs focus on therapy, social skills, and prevention, and require legal guardian consent. This contrasts sharply with the United States, where a massive, largely unregulated commercial sector known as the ‘Troubled Teen Industry’ operates. This industry includes boot camps and wilderness therapy programs that generate significant profits but often lack federal oversight.
Simultaneously, a new social trend called ‘bed rotting’ has emerged among younger generations, particularly Gen Z. Originating on TikTok, the term describes the habit of spending long periods in bed, scrolling through digital content as a form of self-care or a quiet rebellion against societal pressures. Unlike traditional family television viewing, this behavior is typically solitary and lacks a defined end point.
