Youth trends show rising transit use in Flanders and evolving digital habits
In Flanders, the Buzzy Pazz youth transit subscription has seen significant growth, reaching 392,000 active users by the end of 2025. This represents a nearly 19% increase since 2022. The largest user group consists of 12- to 17-year-olds, who make up 53% of all subscriptions. While school commuting is a primary driver, 87% of users utilize buses or trams at least weekly for social activities, hobbies, and leisure.
In the Netherlands, research from the University of Amsterdam explores how digital technology impacts 'me-time' for young adults aged 18 to 25. Researcher Liza Keessen suggests that technology can both facilitate and hinder personal time. While features like 'do not disturb' modes can reduce social pressure and provide freedom of choice, the same digital tools can also act as distractions, creating a complex relationship between connectivity and mental recovery.
