Youth unrest in Italy and France sparks concerns over digital influence
Recent waves of youth-led unrest in Italy and France have highlighted growing social tensions and concerns over digital influence. In Italy, Defense Minister Guido Crosetto characterized the riots in cities such as Milan, Turin, and Bologna as products of a ‘hybrid war’ against the West. Crosetto argued that unconventional tools like TikTok and YouTube are being used to conduct a ‘counter-education’ that instills values in youth that conflict with democratic societal rules. The recent weekend disturbances, involving looting and destruction of commercial establishments, resulted in an estimated one billion euros in damages.
In France, student protests have adopted the unofficial slogan ‘Bismillah, c’est les ténèbres’. The phrase, which translates to ‘In the name of God, it is the darkness’, emerged from a Snapchat conversation used to organize school blockades. Students believe the awkward mix of Arabic and French slang was intentionally used by police agents attempting to infiltrate private protest groups on social media, though these claims of infiltration remain unproven by the Ministry of the Interior.
