Youth voter turnout and the importance of citizenship

Data from the 2024 federal elections in Mexico reveals a significant gap in voter participation between age groups. According to the National Electoral Institute (INE), turnout among citizens aged 18 to 34 was 49.1%, while participation for those aged 35 and older reached 64.6%.

Experts suggest several factors contribute to this disparity, including the impact of entering the labor market, new daily responsibilities, and a growing disenchantment with political institutions that fail to meet citizen expectations. As individuals face increasing professional and personal obligations, political engagement may become a lower priority.

In the United States, the concept of citizenship is highlighted as a fundamental responsibility. For many, obtaining citizenship involves rigorous processes, including English proficiency exams and civic education. Engaging in the democratic process through voting and jury service is presented as a vital way to influence community decisions, such as school board elections and municipal management.
