YouTube launches AI-powered custom thumbnail tools for Shorts
YouTube has added new thumbnail capabilities for Shorts. Creators in the YouTube Partner Program can now upload fully custom thumbnails for new Shorts and retroactively add custom images to previously published Shorts, but the feature is limited to the desktop version of YouTube Studio.
The update also integrates an AI‑driven thumbnail generator into Ask Studio. Creators can request a thumbnail by describing the desired style, colors, layout or text, and the system produces a design that matches the channel’s visual identity. The generated images can be further edited with text commands.
In addition to custom uploads, the desktop interface offers three AI‑suggested frames that creators can choose from. Mobile users can still select any frame from the video as a thumbnail, but cannot upload a custom image. The rollout began on July 25 2026 and does not include A/B testing for Shorts thumbnails.
