YouTube adopts exposure-based model for video views
YouTube is implementing a new “exposure-based model” for counting video views across all formats, including long-form videos, Shorts, podcasts, and live streams. Under this system, a view is registered as soon as the first frame plays, even if a user is merely hovering their cursor over a thumbnail. This change applies to all content uploaded after August 24.
This shift aims to provide more consistency across the platform, aligning YouTube’s metrics with those used by competitors like TikTok and Instagram. While the public-facing view counts are expected to rise significantly—similar to a 70% jump seen when YouTube applied this logic to Shorts last year—the change does not impact creator revenue. YouTube will continue to use a separate metric, referred to as “engaged views,” to calculate ad payouts based on actual watch time.
Data from Metricool highlights a growing paradox in user behavior: while views for both long-form and short-form content are increasing, average watch duration is declining. For Shorts, average view duration has dropped to approximately 16 seconds, presenting a challenge for creators attempting to build deep audience connections through high-volume, low-retention content.
