YouTube expands AI deepfake detection to all adult users

YouTube has extended its artificial‑intelligence deepfake detection system, previously limited to prominent creators, journalists, politicians and other public figures, to every user who is 18 or older. The tool requires users to record a video selfie for facial biometric registration. Once enabled in YouTube Studio’s content‑detection area, the platform continuously scans newly uploaded videos for visual matches to the registered face.

When a potential unauthorized use of a user’s face is identified, YouTube sends an automatic notification, allowing the user to review the flagged material and, if desired, submit a removal request. The system excludes satirical or parody content and currently does not analyze voice or other biometrics. Users may disable the feature at any time and can request deletion of their stored biometric data. The rollout raises privacy and accuracy concerns, especially for less‑well‑known faces, and highlights the challenge of balancing identity protection with the risk of false‑positive takedowns.
