YouTube history: From founding to Google acquisition
YouTube was founded in 2005 by three former PayPal employees: Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim. The platform was designed to simplify video sharing by allowing users to upload and stream content directly in a web browser, bypassing the need for complex downloads or large email attachments.
One of the platform's most significant early milestones was the upload of the first video, ‘Me at the zoo,’ which featured co-founder Jawed Karim. Following rapid growth in traffic, Google acquired YouTube in 2006, providing the necessary infrastructure to manage increasing bandwidth and storage costs.
