YouTube implements AI disclosure labels and AI search trends
YouTube has introduced specific requirements for creators regarding the use of artificial intelligence. Creators must apply an AI label in YouTube Studio when content appears realistic but has been made or meaningfully altered using AI tools. Mandatory disclosure triggers include making a real person appear to say or do something they did not do, altering footage of real events or places, generating realistic scenes that never occurred, or creating AI music that serves as the video's primary focus.
Conversely, YouTube does not require labels for clearly unrealistic content, such as fantasy scenes, or for minor edits like color filters, sharpening, upscaling, or using AI for scripts and outlines. Failure to disclose realistic synthetic content may result in penalties.
New data also highlights YouTube's role in AI-driven search. Research indicates that Google's AI features, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, cite YouTube videos in approximately 36% of answers, whereas ChatGPT cites YouTube in only 2.1% of answers. Notably, video citation frequency in AI answers does not appear to be strictly linked to high view counts or large subscriber bases, with many cited videos originating from smaller channels.
