Spotify implements dynamic QR code verification for Family plans
Spotify has introduced a more stringent verification process for its Premium Family and Duo subscription plans to ensure that all members reside at the same address as the primary account holder. The new system utilizes dynamic QR codes that refresh every few seconds, requiring members to be physically present with the account manager to scan the code using the Spotify mobile app.
Users who receive a verification request have seven days to complete the process. Failure to comply or a failed verification results in the user being downgraded to a free account. Additionally, those who fail the check are barred from joining any other Family or Duo plans for a period of 12 months.
Company executives have described these measures as routine improvements to ensure appropriate use of Premium offerings. The rollout appears to be affecting various regions, including parts of Europe and Latin America, targeting users who share accounts across different households, such as students or relatives living in separate locations.
