YouTube may add audiobooks to Premium tier by 2027
Google is reportedly planning to introduce an official audiobook catalog to its YouTube Premium subscription tier by 2027. According to reports from The Wall Street Journal, Google has been engaging in discussions with various publishers to secure distribution rights for authorized titles.
The move would position YouTube in direct competition with established audiobook services such as Spotify and Audible. While the platform currently hosts a significant amount of spoken-word content, much of it consists of unverified or AI-narrated uploads and public domain works rather than official commercial releases.
Integration of audiobooks could provide a legitimate alternative to unauthorized content and offer a new revenue stream for publishers. While the 2027 timeline remains unconfirmed, the initiative would expand the benefits of the current $16 monthly ad-free subscription, which already includes YouTube Music Premium.
