YouTube project Tamba potentially develops new social media features
Code discovered in a recent Android version of the YouTube app suggests Google is working on a project codenamed “Tamba.” The findings, reported by Android Authority, indicate the development of social networking capabilities including private messaging, group chats, follower requests, and a system for liking posts with hearts.
Technical analysis reveals a unique package identifier, “com.google.android.youtube.sandbox,” and a distinct logo featuring a hand-drawn play button. The code includes 38 new icons for functions such as search, camera, inbox, and stickers, utilizing a design language different from the current YouTube interface. The presence of iOS identifiers suggests a potential multi-platform release.
While the features resemble platforms like Instagram or TikTok, the use of the term “sandbox” in the code suggests this may be an experimental environment. It remains unclear whether Tamba will launch as a standalone application or if these social features are being tested for eventual integration into the main YouTube app to increase user retention.
