YouTube restricts mukbang monetization over eating disorder concerns
YouTube has tightened its monetization guidelines for mukbang and diet-related content to prevent the promotion of eating disorders. The platform now restricts advertising revenue for content that may encourage binge eating, extreme calorie restriction, or behaviors that viewers, particularly youth, might imitate.
Several prominent creators have reported significant impacts. YouTuber Miso revealed she had to delete hundreds of videos following monetization suspensions, while creator Salppaezjo reported that her channel's revenue generation has been halted. Other creators, including DietJo, have paused uploads due to uncertainty regarding which specific videos violate the new rules.
While YouTube maintains that mukbang content is not banned outright, the platform evaluates the context of the videos. Revenue is restricted if the content focuses on eating disorders or includes risky behaviors like purging. Major creators like Tzuyang have acknowledged the shift in trends, noting a move toward more moderate eating styles.
