YouTube to implement AV2 video codec by early 2027
YouTube has announced plans to roll out the AV2 video codec, a next-generation compression format, starting in early 2027. Developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), AV2 is expected to offer approximately 30% better compression efficiency compared to the current AV1 standard.
This technological shift aims to provide higher video quality while reducing data consumption. For users, this could mean smoother streaming on slower internet connections with less buffering, and more efficient use of mobile data bundles. The update is expected to debut on the web version of YouTube first.
Beyond simple playback, AV2 is anticipated to enable new features such as high-quality video calls, multi-stream video viewing (allowing users to watch different camera angles simultaneously), and enhanced support for High Dynamic Range (HDR) content. While Google has demonstrated AV2 functionality in Chrome, widespread adoption will depend on hardware support, as many current devices may require updated processors or graphics chips to decode the format smoothly.
