YouTube plans AV2 video codec rollout for web in early 2027
YouTube intends to begin streaming content using the AV2 video codec on its web platform as early as the beginning of 2027. Developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), AV2 is the successor to the widely adopted AV1 format, which currently covers over 90% of YouTube’s catalog by watch time.
The new codec offers approximately 25% to 32% greater compression efficiency compared to AV1. This advancement allows streaming services to either deliver higher image quality at the same bitrate or reduce data consumption while maintaining current quality levels. Beyond standard video streaming, the format is expected to support multi-view experiences, higher frame rates, improved HDR, and more efficient video conferencing.
While YouTube has provided a tentative timeline for its web experience, specific rollout dates for mobile apps and smart TVs have not been established. Initial implementation will likely rely on software decoding, as current hardware processors lack dedicated AV2 silicon. Industry peers including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Meta are also exploring or preparing for the integration of the technology.
