YouTube to raise monetization requirements for new creators in 2027

YouTube has announced its most significant update to the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) since 2018. Effective February 1, 2027, the platform will implement higher eligibility thresholds for new creators seeking to earn revenue from advertisements and YouTube Premium.

New applicants will be required to reach either 8,000 qualified public watch hours within the previous 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views within a 90-day period. This represents a doubling of the previous requirements, which stood at 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views.

Additionally, the platform is introducing new rules for the Shorts Creator Pool. To maintain eligibility for Shorts advertising and subscription revenue sharing, creators must maintain at least 10 million qualified Shorts views over a rolling 90-day period. Channels that fall below this threshold will remain in the YPP and can continue to monetize long-form content, but Shorts revenue will be paused until the threshold is met again.

Existing YPP members will not be subject to the new entry requirements, though they must accept the updated terms by January 31, 2027, to continue receiving payments. YouTube stated these changes are intended to keep pace with the platform's massive growth, noting that Shorts now receive over 200 billion daily views.

Separately, YouTube is expanding its Premium Lite subscription service to all countries where YouTube Premium is currently available.
