YouTube to double monetization requirements for new creators in 2027

YouTube is implementing its most significant overhaul to the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) since 2018. Starting February 1, 2027, the platform will introduce higher eligibility thresholds for new creators seeking full advertising and subscription revenue sharing.

New applicants will be required to reach 1,000 subscribers and either 8,000 qualified watch hours over the previous 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views over a 90-day period. This effectively doubles the previous requirements of 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views. These changes will not affect creators who are already members of the YPP.

Regarding Shorts monetization, creators must achieve 10 million qualified views within 90 days to qualify for ad and subscription revenue sharing. Channels falling below this mark can still participate in the YPP and earn from long-form content, with Shorts revenue sharing resuming automatically once the threshold is met. YouTube plans to introduce additional incentive programs for smaller creators involving YouTube Shopping, brand deals, and trend growth.

Additionally, the YouTube Premium Lite service will expand to all countries where YouTube Premium is available, offering offline and background viewing. Creators will earn from dedicated subscription revenue pools associated with the service.
